Compiègne has played a significant role in French history due to its strategic location. It hosted French monarchs from the Middle Ages to Napoleon III and was a center of power and relaxation. Notable historical events include the capture of Joan of Arc in 1430, the signing of the World War I armistice in 1918, and the signing of the World War II armistice in 1940.

Today, landmarks such as the Joan of Arc Tower, the Town Hall, Saint-Corneille Abbey, and the palace highlight the city's rich history. The Armistice Clearing and the Memorial of Internment and Deportation at Royallieu camp serve as reminders of Compiègne's involvement in both world wars.
